About Us

Mission: To preserve and operate KATAHDIN as a “living museum” for the benefit of our community, region, and future generations.

Celebrating 40+ Years

The nonprofit Moosehead Marine Museum was originally founded in 1976. A year later, it acquired the Steamboat Katahdin as its star exhibit. In addition to the Katahdin, the Museum has an extensive collection of steamboat memorabilia, logging artifacts and early photographs of the Moosehead area. The Marine Museum is dedicated to preserving the glorious days of steamboating and the heritage of the Moosehead Lake Region. We welcome visitors from near and far to take a step back in time to experience the vibrant and intriguing marine history of the region.

The trip was beautiful. Even on a boat full of people we felt like we were in our own little world. The boat itself is a piece of history. The lake is beautiful.
